Kolkata pandal hopping route for first-timers
A five-night plan for Durga Puja 2026 that groups pandals by area, so you spend your nights at pandals, not in traffic.

The easiest way to see Kolkata's Durga Puja as a first-timer is one area per night: North Kolkata's heritage pujas one night, central South Kolkata the next, then the outer south, Behala, and Salt Lake. Use the metro between clusters and walk within them. Start around 4 PM or go after midnight to avoid the worst queues.
Before you set out
- Pick one area per night. Crossing the city during Puja can take two hours by road.
- Use the metro. The Blue Line runs north to south through Shyambazar, Sovabazar, Kalighat and Rabindra Sarobar, which covers most big pandals.
- Wear shoes you can walk 8–10 km in, carry some cash, a power bank and water, and fix a meeting point in case your group gets separated.
- With children or older family members, go in the afternoon and aim for 6–8 pandals, not 15.
- Even with a VIP Pass, police security checks and crowd-control pauses apply to everyone.

Start by the river at Kumartuli, the idol-makers' quarter, and walk east. These pujas sit close together in old North Kolkata lanes, so you can cover all nine on foot.
Night 2: Central South Kolkata

Santosh Mitra Square near Sealdah is famous for large-scale themes. Cross to Salt Lake afterwards. Dum Dum Park's three pujas, Aswininagar Bandhu Mahal, Prafulla Kanan and Rail Pukur United Club sit north-east of Salt Lake if you want to extend the night.
Which night for which day?
Use the quieter pre-Shashthi evenings (15–16 October) for the busiest areas, North Kolkata and central South Kolkata. Most first-timers manage 6–10 pandals in an evening if they stay within one area and walk between them. Crossing the city by road during Puja can take hours, so avoid mixing North and South Kolkata on the same night.
